Alliance 188
People's Development Organization (PDO), as a member of the Alliance 188-Sulaimani, expresses its gratitude to the European Parliament for its resolution P10_TA(2024)0020 opposing amendments to Iraq’s Personal Status Law No. 188 of 1959.
Since July 24, 2024, the Alliance, alongside Tahaluf 188 Iraq, has actively campaigned against one of the most conservative amendment proposals, which was read twice in the Iraqi Council of Representatives on August 4 and September 16, 2024. Efforts included public gatherings, official correspondence, petition drives, memoranda in multiple languages, and appeals to the United Nations and EU representatives.
A key achievement was establishing direct engagement with EU Parliament Member Pierre Clausen (Red Green Alliance, Denmark), ensuring our advocacy materials were presented ahead of the October 10, 2024, session. The resolution adopted on that date condemns violations of women’s and children’s rights in Iraq and urges the Iraqi government to withdraw the amendment.
We welcome this outcome as a significant milestone in our ongoing work to protect women and children’s rights and to preserve the integrity of the Personal Status Law.
